AJ Auxerre's French international striker Djibril Cissé is almost certain to miss UEFA EURO 2004™ after the UEFA Appeals Body rejected his appeal against a five-match ban.
Under-21 play-off
The 22-year-old received the punishment in December following his dismissal in the UEFA European Under-21 Championship play-off game between France and Portugal on 18 November in Clermont-Ferrand. Cissé was sent off for deliberately kicking an opponent. He did not leave the pitch immediately, however, protesting and insulting the referee as well as acting aggressively towards Portuguese players.
Unavailable until final
Given he is no longer eligible for the U21s, the suspension applies to France's next competitive games which are at EURO 2004™ in June. Cissé would have stood a strong chance of inclusion in Jacques Santini's squad but will now be unavailable until the final, should France get there.
Givet ban reduced
Another France player, Gaël Givet, had his two-match ban for insulting the referee reduced to one match. The Appeals Body also reduced from €6,400 to €4,500 the fine imposed on the French Football Federation, which had been fined for the general improper conduct of its U21 players against Portugal as well as for delaying the kick-off of the first half of extra time.
