Lyon have declared their interest in signing unsettled Real Madrid star Michael Owen.
The England international revealed earlier on Wednesday he had held talks with four clubs over a possible return to England.
Owen is considering his future at Real after the recent arrivals of Robinho and Julio Baptista pushed him further down the pecking order at El Santiago Bernabeu.
French champions Lyon have now admitted they would be interested in signing Owen if he is available.
Lyon boss Gerard Houllier knows all about Owen from his time in charge of Liverpool and he would hope his past connections with the player would help them in a bid to lure him to France.
Lyon chairman Jean-Michel Aulas has admitted that the club are still in the market for a top striker and that they would be interested in Owen.
"I would be very happy if Owen could join us," said Aulas.
"The question is whether the club can afford such a player. I think Lyon can."
Aulas also revealed that Chelsea target Michael Essien seemed likely to stay at the club.
Chelsea are keen to sign the midfield powerhouse, but have failed to agree a deal for Essien.
Lyon are holding out for a big fee for the player and insist they will not be forced into selling him.
Aulas is now confident they will be able to keep hold of their prized-asset even though Essien has admitted he would like to move to Stamford Bridge.
"It is more likely than not that Michael Essien will stay with us this season," added Aulas.
"We have set conditions for his departure and so far those conditions have not been accepted.
"Besides, Chelsea no longer seem really interested."
